Peoria Fireworks Accident Caused by Late Explosion

WGIL Newsroom . State News 186

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Investigators have determined a fireworks accident that lightly injured about a dozen people in Peoria was caused by a delayed explosion.

The Peoria Journal Star says that up to 12 people reported minor burns or other injuries.

The accident occurred Thursday at the city’s Glen Oak Park.

According to a Fire Department investigator, a firework shot from a mortar tube launched correctly but exploded later than designed as it was descending over the park’s lagoon and getting closer to spectators.

It took place during the finale of the fireworks display.

Peoria police Lt. Steve Roegge says two of those who were hurt were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
