American Legion baseball teams are entering their final week of regular season play, and the Galesburg Legion has the day off before hosting Rock Island at Knox College tomorrow at 5:30. Post 285 is coming off of a 6-to-5 win over Wheaton yesterday at the Moline Tournament. Mark Mangieri got the win in relief of starting pitcher Cody Hawthorne, and also picked up the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the 20th win of the summer for Galesburg against 12 losses. District play begins next week in Quincy.
Galesburg’s Josh Eiker ran well, but not quite fast enough to qualify in the 200-meter dash at yesterday’s Junior National Track Meet in Eugene, Oregon. Eiker logged a time of 21.54 seconds, just seven one-hundreths of a second shy of the time needed to qualify for the finals. Eiker will be a junior this fall at Galesburg High School, and plans to play football as well as running track in the spring.
