During tonight’s City Council meeting, aldermen will be considering a plan to allow for the cultivation and dispensing of cannabis as a legal use under the City’s zoning ordinances.
The matter was previously recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission in June.
The state law will allow for 22 cultivation centers around Illinois, which will be managed alongside State Police districts to ensure an even distribution of cultivation.
Up to 60 businesses could also receive licenses statewide for dispensing medical cannabis.
The City of Galesburg is simply preparing for the possibility that one of those operations may want to locate in town.
According to the City’s Community Development Department, general interest has been garnered, but no formal applications have been submitted.
The matter will only be on first reading tonight, making it unlikely the City Council will suspend the rules to pass the measure.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 at Galesburg City Hall.
