Skov, Charles E.

Charles E. Skov, 81, of Monmouth, passed away at 9:40 a.m., Saturday, July 05, 2014, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Ill.

He was born on June 29, 1933 in Kearney, NE. Charles is the son of Jens C. and Edith L. (Johnson) Skov. He was raised and educated in Riverdale, NE. Charles earned a bachelor’s degree at Kearney State Teacher’s College in Kearney, NE. in 1954 and his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Physics from the University of Nebraska in 1963.

Charles served his country from 1954 to 1956 in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in the Signal Corps.

He was united in marriage to Hillis Ann McCormick in the Methodist Church in Central City, NE. on July 11, 1954.

Charles served as a Professor of Physics at Monmouth College for 31 years; he was the chairman of the department for many years. He chose early retirement in 1994 and became a Professor Emeritus at Monmouth College. He was an outstanding teacher who challenged his students, many of whom were very successful during the years after college. Charles served on many committees during his tenure at Monmouth College. He was the faculty representative to the Midwest Conference for many years. He spent 15 months tenure as the Associated Colleges of the Midwest representative at the Argonne National Laboratory in 1971-1972. He has affiliations with SigmaXi, The American Physical Society, The American Association of Physics Teachers, and The American Association of University Professors. Charles also served on the Human Rights Authority Committee for the State of Illinois during the 1990’s protecting disability laws.

Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth. He was an avid reader, and loved hiking, walking, and being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Hillis Ann Skov of Monmouth, two sons; Mitchell M. Skov of Columbia, Mo., Norman C. Skov of East Moline, Ill., one daughter Sarah (Chris) Hennemann of Pawnee, Ill., three grandsons; Cale Hennemann, Cade Hennemann, and Connor Hennemann all of Pawnee. Also surviving is one brother Leonard (Wanda) Skov of Kearney, NE., one sister Marian Fisher of Peoria, Ill., two sisters-in-law Gerry McCormick of Centennial, Co., Patsy McCormick of Lincoln, NE., and many nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two brothers-in-law.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth. Friends may call from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the church where his family will be present. In Lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church, WVIK Augustana Public Radio, Rock Island, Ill. or the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, Ill.
