District 205 Union Contract to Expire This Month

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 216

The Galesburg Education Association is hoping current contract negotiations can be resolved before their previous contract expires.

Several members of the group showed up to Monday night’s Board of Education meeting to encourage the process. The current three-year contract between District 205 and the GEA is set to expire at the end of this month.

According to the union, a mediator has been invited to aid in the discussions. GEA Spokesperson Tami Qualls tells WGIL the district is still relatively solvent.

“We’re not trying to ask them anything that would be above and beyond what we think our district could do because we want what’s best for kids and our district,” says Qualls.

The Board of Education went into closed door session to work on the negotiations, Monday night. Qualls tells WGIL they’re hoping for another multi-year contract.

“We want to resolve it in a friendly way,” says Qualls. “We don’t want teachers stressed out. That’s not another thing we want them to focus on. We’re focusing on going back to school and meeting, and the needs of our kids and they’re varied and many.”

Few specifics can be released on the state of contract talks at this point.
