Bustos Praises SSA Decision to Continue Certain Services

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 167

Bustos picAccording to a press release, the Social Security Administration has decided to reverse their decision to cut at least one service next month.

Social Security number printouts and benefit verification statements would not have been supplied if scheduled reductions allowed to proceed.

17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos sent a letter in June to the SSA and received word yesterday that they would continue providing benefit verification letters.
Seven Social Security field offices are located in the 17th congressional district.

Legislation was introduced by Congressman Bruce Braley out of Iowa’s First district to stall the cuts. That bill is still considered in its early stages.

The service reductions would have meant increased wait times, or would have required applying for benefits over the web – something Bustos suggested is a skill some seniors are without.

Bustos called the decision a “triumph for seniors.” The Social Security Administration does have longer term plans to move certain services to the web.

Bustos, along with many other supporters in Congress, have put their support behind the bill to continue supplying the services in future years.
