Walters, Betty Jane

Betty Jane Walters, 84, of Galesburg, died at 6:35 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center.

She was born October 21, 1929 in Galesburg the daughter of Lloyd G. and Velora (Bauman) Poole. She married Wayne C. Walters on March 13, 1948 in Galesburg.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wayne and two sons, Gregg (and wife, Anna Veprinsky) Walters of Parker, Colo. and Garry (and wife, Carol) Walters of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Phyllis; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy.

Betty worked as a legal secretary for many years, including at the Sig B. Nelson Law Firm, the John Blake Law Firm and the Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office. She was highly valued and sought-after for her outstanding typing and stenographic skills. She then worked at Bridgeway in medical transcribing until she and Wayne retired together on May 29, 1992. She graduated from Galesburg High School. She was a member of First Christian Church and had served as a deaconess there. Betty and Wayne met at the Glass House Roller Rink and roller skated together for nearly 40 years into their late 50’s. They were well known in the local skating circuit, and received Presidential Fitness Award for skating. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan. She loved baking, sewing, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Greg Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel.
