City Council Adopts Medical Cannabis Uses, Businesses Interested

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 289

galesburgThe cultivation and dispensing of medical cannabis is now legal in Galesburg.

The City Council, last night, shared some final considerations before adopting the proposal to make the two designations a legal use under City zoning ordinances.

Changes to the City’s zoning code were recommended in preparation for the state of Illinois’ “Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program” Act.

Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen says he supports the changes in Galesburg.

“I think there’s a lot of education that needs to be done to the general public [on] what this actually is,” Allen said.  “They can see open fields of marijuana, with people coming in at night picking a sack-full, all kinds of things like that.  So, I think, we have some obligations to do our education to the general public.”

The Council adopted the proposal 4-1.

Illinois would allow 20 cultivation centers and 60 dispensaries around the state.

Mayor and WGIL Owner John Pritchard disclosed after the meeting that there are two cannabis based businesses interested in potentially locating in Galesburg.  Although Pritchard didn’t have the company names, he says around 35 full-time jobs would be created should those businesses be awarded a state license.
