The Galesburg Post 285 American Legion baseball team is looking for its ninth-straight win today, as they battle Peoria in the championship matchup at the Division 3 Tournament in Jerseyville. Galesburg enters the day’s action with a record of 32-15, while Peoria is 20-7, following yesterday’s 10-7 win over East Moline.

A win by Galesburg would give them the title, and send them to next week’s state tournament in Arlington Heights. Should Peoria win the afternoon game, the teams would then meet again tonight to decide the champion in the double-elimination tournament.

Back-to-school preparations continue, and the Knoxville school district is set to conduct athletic physicals this weekend. The cost is $10, with physicals being offered from 8 to 11 Saturday morning at the Knoxville Junior High School.

Galesburg High School tennis coach Leeanne Scherpe is organizing a doubles-team fundraiser to be held on Saturday, August 9th at the Art Fish Courts at GHS. There will be five different age brackets, and the cost is $40 per team. The second annual “summer slam” helps to raise funds for the Streaks boys and girls tennis programs. For more information or to register, you can call or email Coach Scherpe at Galesburg High School.
