It began Friday night with craft vendors and a night glow.
That wasn’t the end of the activities, however, for the annual Galesburg Great Balloon Race.
Dozens gathered at Lake Storey this weekend – some of whom are from around the Midwest to both fly their balloons or simply watch the pilots do their work.
Since 2000, the Balloon Race has attracted balloon enthusiasts to take part in the various competitions
Event Organizer Greg Saul tells WGIL they started this race to attract tourism and have a family oriented event.
“We have basically what we call the ballooning family,” says Saul. “We have several balloon friends that come to our event from different areas, we also go to some of their events, that’s how we get the balloonists here.”
Weather conditions weren’t always cooperative throughout the weekend, but festivities continued, including launches and night glows.
Vendors are invited each year to provide food and other services throughout the weekend.
Pilots had the opportunity to take flight through Sunday morning; Sunday flights have since been cancelled.
