McMillan, Merrill G.

Merrill “Mac” G. McMillan, 79, of Galesburg, died at 9:46 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014 at home.

He was born June 15, 1935 in Macomb, Ill. the son of Glen and Berniece S. (Clarke) McMillan. He married Wanda C. Bush on December 7, 1957 in Carthage, Ill.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Wanda; a son, Mitchell G. (and Gail Hopping) McMillan of Galesburg; two daughters, Shelly L. Primmer of Spartanburg, S.C. and Stacie D. (and Mike) Westfall of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Jessica A. (and Galen) Ayers of Galesburg, Amanda C. (and Cory) Shivers of Greer, S.C., Barrett J. Primmer of Spartanburg, Kayla J. Westfall of Galesburg, and Katie L. Westfall of Galesburg; one great granddaughter, Layla G. Ayers; and a sister-in-law, Carol McMillan of Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Jeffrey W. Primmer; and a brother, Marlon “Mike” G. McMillan.

Mac worked at Maytag for 30 years, retiring in August 1994. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1952 and attended Western Illinois University. Mac was very athletic and enjoyed watching high school football, baseball, and coaching Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion baseball. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He also played fast pitch softball for multiple leagues and followed the World Fast Pitch Softball Tournament. Mac was honored by the IHSA for attending thousands of state basketball games and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, traveling throughout the United States, spending time at his cabin, fish fries, and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel followed by a eulogy. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation.
