Mieth, Eleanor Inness

Eleanor Inness Mieth, 102, passed from her earthly home to her heavenly home on July 26, 2014. She passed in the same gracious way in which she lived her life. All who knew her were the lucky recipients of her kindness and generosity.

Born to George Inness and Nellie Roadstrum Inness on December 29, 1911, Eleanor led a long and fruitful life. Her early life was spent in Galesburg and in Regina, Canada where her father was involved in farming. She graduated from Knox College and then went on to the get her Library Science degree from the University of Illinois. Her career included library positions in public, university, and business ventures across the United States. The last position she held before retiring was as head of Advanced Systems Development Division for IBM in San Jose, Calif. In this position she developed the first information services library at the very beginning of the computer age.

Eleanor and her husband, Stanley T. Mieth lived for many years at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. where she was very involved in golf, receiving a hole-in-one while in her early 80’s. She was also a 75 plus year member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, a member of its Galesburg Alum Club and a member of Grace Church.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, George (Marcy) Inness, Jane Inness Youngquist, Robert (Monica) Inness and Richard (Pam) Inness, all of Galesburg, and Eleanor Joanne Inness Muck of Rockford, Ill. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Mieth White of Santa Barbara, Calif. and nieces and nephews in California and Hawaii, Ron (Kay) Balue of Los Angeles, Barbara (Tom) McIntyre of Santa Cruz and Lanai City, Hawaii, Carol (Dale) Achibal of Santa Cruz, Michelle (Marco) Moros of Alamo, Dean White of Santa Barbara, and Alan (Vangie) White of Kailua, Hawaii and many great nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Henry V. Inness and sister-in-law, Grace Metcalf Inness; her half-sister, Sybil Inness Gardner, all of Galesburg and her sisters-in-law, Bea Mieth Eklof and Edie Mieth Theis, of Santa Cruz, Calif.

A celebration of her life will be held at Grace Church-Anglican in Galesburg on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Barnds officiating. Memorials may be made to the church or to the Knox College Library. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
