Simpson, Gladys L.

Gladys L. Simpson, 97, of Alexis, died 1:27 P.M. Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Genesis Medical Center, Aledo.

She was born March 6, 1917 at Sunbeam, Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Louis W. and Nellie Blanche (Gilmore) Smith. She raised and educated in the Aledo area and graduated from Aledo High School in 1935.

Gladys married Melvin F. Simpson on September 5, 1935 in Monmouth and he preceded her in death on May 28, 2001.

She and her husband farmed west of Alexis until retiring and moving into Alexis in 1992. She was a seamstress at Bowman-Colwell Department Store in Monmouth for 9 years. She was an avid seamtress and quilter.

She was a active member of the Norwood Presbyterian Church and a member of Eastern Star of Alexis, having served as Past Matron and was a member of the Norwood Community Club and the Alexis Women’s Club. She served on the Warren County Election Board for 25 years.

Her family includes two son, Robert (Karen) Simpson, of Viola and Richard (Janet) Simpson of Alexis, 7 grandchildren, Jeff Simpson and Sandy Simpson both of Aledo, Kathy Dunn of Maryland, Gary Simpson of Alexis, Susan Andrews of Tennessee, Tom McKee of Colorado and John McKee of Texas 16 great grandchildren. 2 step great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 brothers, one daughter, Edythe McKee, one granddaughter, and one great great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Norwood Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Dutton. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday morning at the church, where her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Norwood Presbyterian Church.
