33-year-old Kenwaun Murray made the plea yesterday in Knox County Circuit Court through Public Defender Karl Johnson to multiple charges of Aggravated Battery. Murray had faced a Class-X felony charge of Armed Robbery among others, but prosecutors later amended that charge to the lesser felonies.
Murray was arrested in early July. Galesburg Police Detective Todd Olinger testified that officers were called June 22nd to the Broadview Inn during the morning hours, after what is believed to be a dispute between one of the victims and an adult dancer took place. Olinger says the dancer is believed to have brought Murray and another man back to the scene. Murray allegedly assaulted both of the men with a carjack found at the scene.
Olinger says injuries on one of the men were so severe, they’ve likely caused permanent speech problems, and a metal plate to be placed on the man’s skull.
Johnson also requested a trial by jury for Murray, which was scheduled for September. Murray also pleaded not guilty to a felony drug charge in a separate case, for which a trial was scheduled for October.
A judge yesterday denied a motion to reduce Murray’s $50,000 bond in the cases.
