Quad Cities Bridge Closed

WGIL Newsroom . State News 125

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — One of the Mississippi River bridges linking the Quad Cities has closed to allow work on the span.

The Quad-City Times reports the Centennial Bridge linking Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois, closed Sunday. The contractor can keep the bridge closed up to 35 days, with traffic resuming by Sept. 6.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says the closure is needed to replace expansion joints and beams across the width of the bridge. Crews have been working on the bridge since June as part of the $3.35 million project, which also includes concrete repairs to several piers and the deck as well as steel repairs to the structure.

Motorists are being directed to the Interstate 280 bridge to cross the Mississippi.
