Barnhill, Iva Lucille

Mrs. Iva Lucille Barnhill, 87, of East Galesburg, Ill. died at 9:25 pm Sunday, August 3, 2014 in Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, Ill.

She was born August 8, 1926 in Fairview, Ill. the daughters of Thomas and Nellie Mecoy Cotton. At nine months old, Iva moved to East Galesburg, where she was raised and attended Highland schools. She married Harold Francis Barnhill August 16, 1942 in Macon, Mo. He preceded her in death on June 15, 2013.

She is survived by four daughters, Phyllis (Howard) Gibson of Knoxville, Susie (Bill) Connour of Elmwood, Neb., Fran (Steve) Scharfenberg of Knoxville, and Carol (John ) Shotts of Galesburg; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sons, Harold Lee and Harold Francis Jr., two brothers, Willard and Ernest Cotton, one sister, Florence Spicher, her half brother, Chester Cotton and her half sister, Dolly McDaniel.

Iva had worked for Knox Laundry with her mother-in-law, Ella Barnhill before going to work at the Galesburg Hemp Mill, one of the 15 plants the government built in Illinois aiding in the war effort making rope to meet the needs of the armed forces. After World War II, Iva and Harold lived in Mo. for just over a year before moving to East Galesburg and staying at home, having six children and raising four daughters was her life. Iva and Harold lived in East Galesburg for over 66 years.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Wednesday in Knoxville Cemetery. Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Visiation will be Noon-1:30 pm at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.
