Highway to Honor Late Warren County Sheriffs Deputy

WGIL Newsroom . Local News, State News 195

MONMOUTH, Ill. (AP) — A one-mile stretch of a Warren County highway in Illinois will be dedicated later this week in honor of a sheriff’s deputy who died in the line of duty.

George Darnell was shot and killed after responding to a call of suspicious activity in December 1981. The 61-year-old was a World War II veteran.

Earlier this year, lawmakers approved naming a section of U.S. Route 67 near the western Illinois community of Monmouth in memory of Darnell.

County officials are expected to host a dedication on Thursday morning. It’s open to the public.
