Barnstead, Elizabeth H.

Elizabeth H. “Bette” Barnstead of Galesburg, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Seminary Manor.

She was born on March 31 in Chicago, the daughter of Philip and Margaret (Gallagher) Hull. She married Dr. Robert Cabeen in 1945 in Lajolla, California and he preceded her in death December 26, 1989. She married Raleigh G. Barnstead on September 28, 1974 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death April 4, 2000.

Bette is survived by two sons, Larry Cabeen (and wife Pam) of Geneva, Illinois and Paul Cabeen (and wife Jane) of Apache Junction, Arizona; two daughters, Linda Corson (and husband Steve) and Dr. Martha Cabeen (and husband Richard Garbarino), both of Boulder, Colorado; five grandchildren, Joanne and David Corson and Phill, Catherine, and Joshua Cabeen; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Long (and husband Dr. Edwin T.) of Kansas City, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Hull.

Bette was a realtor/broker and owned the Century 21 office in Galesburg for 25 years, retiring in 2002. Bette began her career as a businesswoman with the opening of her own store in downtown Galesburg, Pants Plus. Eventually the store’s popularity led her to expand to a second store in Iowa. She was raised and educated in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where she graduated from high school. She attended Lake Forest College. She had lived in Galesburg since 1947.

Bette was a very active member of the Galesburg community. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She served on the Galesburg Multiple Listing Services Board, the Knox County United Way Board and had served as Campaign Co-Chairperson, served on the Civic Center Authority Board for six years, served on the Nova Singers Board for six years and was Past President, served on the Prairie Players Board for 20 years and was Past President, was a key player in the Orpheum Theatre renovation project, served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, was a member of Galesburg Noon Rotary Club, and was a volunteer with the Christmas in Action Program. In 1998, Bette received the Chamber of Commerce Thomas B. Herring Community Service Award.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. David Esche will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery, near Aledo, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Prairie Players or First Presbyterian Church.
