Cervantez, Steven

Steven Cervantez, 58, of Galesburg, died at 6:24 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 in rural Marseilles following an automobile accident.

Steve was born November 11, 1955 in Galesburg, the son of Anthony and Frances B. Padilla Cervantez. Steve married Carrie Cowan on June 12, 1976 in Galesburg. He is survived by his mother, Frances of Galesburg; two daughters, Tianna Cervantez and Keisa (Dustin) Henry both of Galesburg; four sons, Christopher of Chicago, Daniel (Amanda) of Minot, ND, Dylan and Nicholas both of Galesburg; one sister, Cyndi (Steve) Shotts of Galesburg; two brothers, David of Galesburg and Shawn of Davenport, IA; and two half brothers, Reid and Reagan Cervantez both of Galesburg. Steve has two grandsons, Jason Maulden who died Sunday, August 3, 2014 following the accident and Tavian Cervantez of Galesburg. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony in 1994.

Steve attended St. Joseph’s Academy, Costa Catholic School, and graduated from Galesburg High School. Following high school he played semi-pro football in the quad cities for the Mohawks. He had been a conductor for BNSF since 1977. Steve was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, LULAC, Peacekeepers, and the Hispanic-Latino Resource Group. He was also an avid union member of UTU Local 195. Steve was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed golfing and working out at the YMCA. Steve was a proud Silver Streak and longtime season ticket holder at GHS since 1974. He had become the “Rally Walker” for the Legion baseball team this season. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren play their sports.

Steve’s family meant everything to him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Hopefully his stories will remain a part of everyone he shared them with.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rev. William T. Miller, IC will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be Friday, August 8, 2014 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. The rosary will be prayed prior to the visitation Friday at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be designated at a later time.
