Johnson, Albert P.

Albert P. (Bud) Johnson, 89, of Galesburg, died at 11:10 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 in the Knox County Nursing Home.

He was born November 23, 1924 in Galesburg, the son of Earl R. and Mildred H. (Gerhardt) Johnson. He married Betty L. Nicholson in 1961 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on November 26, 2004.

He is survived by a daughter, Julie (and Roger) Newell of Williamsfield; three grandchildren, Roganne (and Matt) Murray of Paxton, Ryann (and Jacob) Kesler of Dewey, and Jordan (and Courtney) Newell of Chicago; three great grandchildren, Teagan and Rhett Murray and Jackson Kesler; two sisters, Jane DeWeese and Pat Henry, both of Galesburg; a brother, Dick Johnson of Hialeah, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, John Reed Newell; and siblings, Tootie Hagerty, Evelyn Ellison, Marge Cain, Bob Johnson, and Christine Luker.

Bud was a concrete finisher for many years. He and Betty enjoyed going to antique shows and flea markets, both buying and selling. Bud especially loved antique telephones and had collected hundreds over the years. He once found a silver dollar payphone.

He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He was stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind. The ship and its crew are known for their mission to Greenland, where they captured the last German weather station, Edelweiss II and the German trawler, Externsteine.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearon-West Galesburg Chapel. Graveside service will follow at East Linwood Cemetery. Rev. Jim Ecklund will officiate and military rites will be provided. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society. Onlne condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
