Terpening, Sherrill

Mr. Sherrill Terpening, 102, of Federal Way, Washington, formerly of Galesburg, Illinois died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 in Washington.

He was born on December 6, 1911 in Warren County, Illinois to Wilbur A. and Florence “Mabel” Swigert Terpening.  He married Marion Peterson in Galesburg on June 22, 1941.  She preceded him in death on January 1, 1995.

He is survived by a son, David A. (and Sharlotte) Terpening of Tacoma, Washington; a brother, Kyle Terpening of Monmouth, Illinois; two grandchildren, Dustin (and Abby) Terpening and Chandra (and Garrett) Curtis; four great grandchildren, Kyah and Sadie Terpening and Isabella and Daniel Curtis  He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Sherrill operated a John Deere Store for four years.  He farmed for 20 years. He was a line inspector at Maytag Manufacturing for 13 years, retiring in 1976.  He operated Omni Realty for many years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II based primarily in Calcutta, India.

He was a 1931 graduate of Galesburg High School.  He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg, Vesper Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 727 in Oneida, Illinois.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Pamela Marolla officiating.  Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.  Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg.  Military honors will be provided by Ralph M Noble American Legion Post 285.  Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church.  Online condolences may be left at www.h-p-w.com.
