Johnson, Barbara Joan

Barbara Joan (Teel) Johnson, 79, passed away on Wednesday August 20, 2014 at 12:58 a.m. at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville IL after a 4-year battle with cancer. She was born on September 22, 1934 in Galesburg IL to Kenneth and Agnes (Ahlers) Teel and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951. She worked for the L.A. Linman Insurance Agency in Galesburg before her marriage on February 6, 1955 to Howard Johnson at Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. Barb enjoyed playing bridge with several groups of friends, traveling, games, reading, and spending time with her family to which she was so devoted.

Barb was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville where she had served on the church council, stewardship committee, Lutheran Church Women, and funeral lunch co-chair. She was a charter member of the Knoxville Junior Women’s Club, serving as president and district treasurer, and she was also a charter member and past president of the Knoxville Amethyst Club. She served for 12 years as the Public Education chair for the Knox County chapter of the American Cancer Society and provided transportation to Peoria for cancer treatment patients. She was also a member of the M.I. Club and the Knox County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, and she previously served as president of the Mabel Woolsey School PTA. She was also involved with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Howard of Knoxville; two sons, Jeff (Laurie) of Knoxville and Bruce (Andrea) of Freeport; one brother Ronald (Helen) Teel of Brimfield; grandchildren, Michael (Cassie) Johnson of Des Moines IA, David (Andrea) Johnson of Milwaukee WI, and Kelsey and Amber Johnson of Knoxville and Haley Johnson (deceased); and great-grandchildren Claire, Cora and Clay Johnson of Des Moines, Skylar Johnson of Knoxville, and soon-to-be-born Sofia Johnson of Milwaukee along with numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her granddaughter Haley.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday August 23, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 108 S. Timber Street in Knoxville with the Reverend Michel Clark officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. Cremation rites have been accorded with private family burial of ashes at Knoxville Cemetery. Per the family’s request of omission of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society, or OSF Hospice.
