With the beginning of the fall sports season, public scrimmages are being planned for many area athletic teams in the coming days. The latest to announce is the Galesburg High School volleyball team, which will hold their “Meet the Streaks” night on Monday at the Hawthorne Center Gymnasium. The event will begin at 5pm with the introduction of the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Varsity teams. The scrimmage is not being held at Galesburg High School due to the ongoing teacher’s strike. The same is true for the GHS football team, which will scrimmage tomorrow afternoon from 1-to-3 at Knox College.
The latest athletic cancellations due to the Galesburg teacher’s strike have been announced. The GHS girls golf meet against Rock Island scheduled for Monday at Lake Bracken has been cancelled, as has the Streaks’ boys golf meet against Alleman.
Management of the Peoria Chiefs baseball team announced that the St. Louis Cardinals will continue their player development contract with the Midwest League team. Cardinals Vice President and General Manager John Mozeliak (Mo zay lock) was in Peoria Wednesday, and yesterday signed a four-year extension to continue their affiliation with the Chiefs. Rocky Vonachen, the Chiefs president, said it’s essentially a six-year deal, as there were two years left on the existing contract with the Cardinals.
