Burns, Donald A.

Donald A. Burns, 69, of Galesburg, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2014 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born December 7, 1944 Galesburg, the son of Arol H. and Ruth M. (Richardson) Burns. He married Nancy M. Rammage August 21, 1982 in Altona.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy; a step son, Chris (and Amy) Rammage of Wataga; a step daughter, Wanda Beth (and Hank) McLearn of Gilson; five step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; a sister, Janice M. (and David) Hawkinson of Galesburg; a brother, Richard D. (and Dottie) Burns of Overland Park, Kansas;

Don worked for the USDA for a total of 41 years. He began in June 1966 as a Farm Management Supervisor Trainee for Farmers Home Administration in Galesburg. Over the years, he was Assistant County Supervisor in Oregon (IL), Galesburg, Anna, and Monmouth. He was promoted to County Supervisor in Pittsfield in 1973, where he worked until 1978. He transferred to the Galesburg Area Office of Rural Development in 1978 as Area Specialist and retired from that position in 2007.

Don graduated from R.O.V.A. High School in 1963 and Western Illinois University in 1967. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Agriculture Fraternity at Western. He served in the United States Army from January 1968 to February 1970. He served in the Military Police at Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Gordon, and Fort Hood. Don was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He was a member of the United Church of Altona.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation with burial of remains at a later date in the Oneida Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the ROWVA Public Schools Foundation.
