Sargent, Emma Gene

Emma Gene Sargent, 70, of Galesburg, died at 7:35 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 in the emergency room of OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

Emma was born March 8, 1944 in Bolivar, Tennessee, the daughter of A.C. and Laura Irene (Blalock) Spinks. Emma married Robert Jackson, who preceded her in death. Emma then married Robert Sargent. Emma met her soulmate, James Blackwell, over 26 years ago.

Emma is survived by her soulmate, James Blackwell of Galesburg; four sons, Rory Jackson (Debbi) and Robert “Bob” Jackson, both of Galesburg, Robert (and Michelle) Sargent of Wataga, and Anthony Sargent (Helen) of St. Paul, Minnesota; three daughters, Robyn Broadfield and Renita (and Mearon) Diggins, both of Galesburg and Laura (and Jaswick) Dyett of Grimes, Iowa; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; three brothers, Lester Spinks (Rose) and Curtis (and Wanda Faye) Spinks, both of Galesburg and Heston Spinks (Kathy) of Peoria; six sisters, Estherline (and Grant) Duncan of Peoria, Lou Annette (and Henery) Mayberry of Bloomington, Cinthia (and Dean) Morrison of St. Paul, Tuesday Spinks of Galesburg, and Doreen Spinks-Cherry of Florissant, Missouri and Teresa Spinks (Anthony), both of St. Louis; and host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Madilyn Jackson, whose fiancé, Chuck Thompson survives; a granddaughter, Teneshia Hamilton; four brothers, A.C. Spinks, Jr., Robert L. Spinks, Calvin O. Spinks, and Corina Spinks; and a sister, Mattie Mixon.

Emma graduated from Galesburg High School in 1961. She worked for the former Galesburg Research Hospital for many years until they closed. Emma then started attending Carl Sandburg College in 1985 and transferred to Western Illinois University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1989 and her Masters Degree in 1991. Emma worked at Carl Sandburg College as a Sociology instructor for 10 years. Emma was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Emma was involved in numerous groups and activities in Galesburg. Emma was a loving mother and grandma to our community.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Central Congregational Church. Rev. Jerry Cato and Rev. Jon Sibley will officiate. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with remarks by Rev. Sibley from 6-7 p.m. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.
