McGee, Burrel E.

Burrel E. “Fibber” McGee, 86, of Galesburg, died at 1:55 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014 in Heartland Health Care Center.

He was born May 25, 1928 in Bushnell, the son of Ralph and Hazel (Ide) McGee. He married Velma B. “Molly” Hillier on June 4, 1946 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on February 8, 2014.

He is survived by one son, Barry Dean (and Pam) McGee of Galesburg; a daughter-in-law, Mary McGee of Galesburg; two grandchildren, Traci (and Sam) Anderson of Davis Junction and Dean M. McGee of Galesburg; three great grandchildren, Myranda, Allison, and Michael; a sister, Claire Dosier of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Timothy J. McGee and Darrell L. McGee; a daughter, Laurie Lynn McGee; a brother, Leland “Jim” McGee; and a sister, Shirley Flickinger.

Fibber was a millwright for Fox Construction in Galesburg until 1970 when he and Molly moved to Florida. He was the owner and operator of McGee’s Welding and Fabrication in Florida. They returned to Galesburg in 2008. He was a member of First Christian Church. Fibber enjoyed stock car racing, winning the Illinois State Championship in 1951 and 1961. He was well known in the circuit for his flair and his cigar. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Fibber was a 35 year member of A.A. He was a good sponsor in Florida and Galesburg and only a phone call away for many people.

He served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2014 at East Linwood Cemetery. Pastor Mary Runge will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Hospice Compassus.
