Bangert, Michael J.

Michael J. Bangert, 66, of Galesburg died at 6:48 pm Monday, September 8, 2014 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born December 5, 1947 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Gerald J. and Mary E. Graves Bangert. He married Vickey S. Clewell on June 29, 1985 in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving is his mother, Mary E. Bangert of Quincy, Illinois; his son, Brett A. (Michelle) Bangert of Tampa, Florida; two daughters, Amanda N. (Chris) Carpenter and Alicia R. Bangert both of Galesburg; his brother, Steven G. (Janice) Bangert of Champaign, Illinois and two grandchildren, McKenzie and Josiah. He is preceded in death by his father on March 26, 2006.

Michael served in the US Army during the Vietnam War in the Alpha Troop 2nd Squadron 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment during TET Offensive. He also served as a drill instructor after his overseas tour.

He worked as a supervisor for United Facilities for 25 years, retiring in 2009. He played basketball for Galesburg High Schoool and graduated in 1965. He enjoyed cooking and playing Xbox games. He was an avid reader and loved Military history. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. Michael was a very proud grandpa and an amazing Father that will be forever missed.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Monday, September 15, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. M.J. Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery 1 pm Monday with Military Rites by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to the Defenders of Freedom Veterans Home.
