Skinner, Melba

Melba L. Skinner Abingdon Chapel age 96 of Abingdon, died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.
She was born on February 1, 1918 in rural Knoxville, the daughter of Charles and Addie Gibbs Peck. She married Floyd Skinner on January 11, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 9, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Charles “Bud” Peck, Harold Peck and Wilbur Peck, and one sister, Dorothy Johnston.
Melba is survived by one son, Larry (Judith) Skinner of Abingdon; one grandson, James (Sheryl) Skinner of Galesburg; one granddaughter, Tricia (Kenneth) Litchfield of Abingdon; two great-grandchildren, Dean Skinner and Anna Skinner; and nieces and nephews.
She grew up in Knoxville and attended Knoxville schools. She later received her diploma from Knox County Public Schools in 1932. She was a homemaker and farm wife. She had lived most of her life in Abingdon. She was a member of the former Delong Christian Church. She was also a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a past member of the Lake Bracken Country Club. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years prior to his death.
Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.   Memorials may be made to the Abingdon-Avon Public Schools Foundation.
