McCoy, Myron Gene

Myron Gene McCoy, age 93, passed peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2014 while surrounded by family. He was born on February 10th, 1921 the son of Gladys Hughes-McCoy and Harley McCoy. Myron grew up in Gilson and Kirkwood area. His aunt, Bertha Upp, was an important part of his life following the death of his mom when he was three. He attended school at Sumner Country School, Kirkwood, and Knoxville, Illinois.

He married Edith Johnson on August 23, 1939 of Knoxville, Illinois and they had two children, Richard McCoy and Patricia McCoy-Inness. Myron served in the United States Army during World War II, in the 1st Calvary Division, 7th regiment in the South Pacific. After serving his country, he worked for the Sinclair Pipeline, and then later was the second employee hired by Gates Rubber Company until he retired. He was an avid lifelong CUBS fan, lifelong member of the Harry Philblad American Legion Post #749, and an active member of the First Christian Church in Knoxville, Illinois.

After the passing of his first wife, Edith in 1973. Myron married Margaret “Betty” Shreeves on October 17, 1977 of Knoxville, Illinois. They were happily married until Betty’s passing in 2012. Myron was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Pauline McCoy, a son Richard of West Dundee, and his sister Gerri Spicer of Monmouth, Illinois.

Myron is survived by his daughter Pat Inness of Galesburg, Illinois; a step-son Rev. David (Kathy) Shreeves of Knoxville, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Mary K. Olson of Galesburg, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Barbra (Nick) Bracio of West Dundee, Illinois; two sisters, Marjory Nash of Hemet, California, and Jo Menely of Fullerton, California. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jeff (Tina) McCoy of New Hampshire, Kris (Lisa) McCoy of New Hampshire, Doug (Nancy) Inness of Galesburg, Illinois, Ted (Teresa) Inness of Galesburg, Illinois, Elizabeth (John) Miller of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Christine (Phillip) Wenstrom of Wataga, Illinois; step grandchildren, Laura Simpson of Kingston, Washington, Tammy Graves of Tucson, Arizona, and Martin Shreeves of San Francisco, California; twenty great grandchildren, two great-great granddaughters, multiple nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 26, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Knoxville, Illinois, with a fellowship following the services at the Church at 12:00 Noon. Rev. David Shreeves will officiate. Private Family Graveside Services will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois.
