Cherrington, Reba Genell

Reba Genell Cherrington, 87, of Galesburg, died at 7:27 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the Knox County Nursing Home.

She was born February 12, 1927 in West Frankfort, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas F. and Lois (Sanders) Pickens. She was married to Irvin C. Cherrington on August 17, 1947 in West Frankfort by her father, Rev. Tom Pickens. Irvin preceded her in death July 5, 2008.

She is survived by two sons, Timothy L. (and Susan) Cherrington of Galesburg and Samuel M. (and Diane) Cherrington of Cameron; two daughters, Brenda J. Seibert and Teresa R. (and Charles) Cash, both of Galesburg; nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Rev. Thomas (and Dorothy) Pickens of Hendersonville, N.C. and Rev. Kenneth Pickens of Vandalia. In addition to her husband, Reba was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Billy Seibert on March 14, 2014; and two brothers, Sam and Charles Pickens.

Reba was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She was a musician who enjoyed playing the piano. She was a member of First Church of God, where she was a Sunday school and Bible teacher. She and Irvin also conducted services at the Galesburg Rescue Mission.

Reba graduated from West Frankfort High School in 1945, attended Anderson College, and graduated from Carl Sandburg College with an associate’s degree in Literature. In addition to music, she enjoyed reading and cooking.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2014 at First Church of God. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dennis McQuown and Rev. Sam Cherrington officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First Church of God or Galesburg Rescue Mission. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors of Galesburg is handling arrangements.
