Hoxworth, Millie D.

Millie D. Hoxworth, 95, of Avon, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:04 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at home.

Millie was born September 19, 1919 in Metropolis, Illinois, the daughter of Herman and Katie (Curtner) Gollehur. She married Bernard Johnson on March 16, 1946 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death in 1976. She later married Ward A. Hoxworth on February 12, 1977 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1996.

She is survived by a son, John E. (and Becky) Johnson of Sullivan, Illinois; four grandchildren, Jimmy (and Tammy) Johnson of Knoxville, Billy (and Christie) Johnson of Ophiem, Brittany Johnson of Sullivan, and Sueann Grogan of Fort Madison, Iowa; seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; her companion, Donald Caves of Avon; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, James Gollehur, Marshall “Doc” Gollehur, William Gollehur, Grover Gollehur, Finenus Gollehur, and Herman Gollehur Jr.; and a sister, Ina May Webber.

Millie moved to Galesburg in 1929 and attended Galesburg schools. She was a homemaker and worked at various places over the years including, Knox County Nursing Home, Frank Jewelry, Hickory Farms, Woolworth, and Henderson Grove Grade School. Millie was past president of VFW #2257 Auxiliary, past senior regent of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Millie played the guitar and sang in various night clubs around the country. She was on the WLS Barn Dance radio station out of Chicago. Her hobbies included traveling, fishing, dancing, and needle work. She was an honorary member of the Commander’s Club for the American Disabled Veterans.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. M.J. Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
