Melton, Doris Lucan McCracken

Doris Lucan McCracken Melton, 97, of Rio, Illinois passed into the arms of the Lord at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2014 in Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, Illinois.

Doris was born May 25, 1917 in Princeton, Illinois the daughter of Charles and Mary (Hickel) Lucan. She married Wilbur “Bud” McCracken on January 9, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. Together they had two children, Phyllis (and John) Massarolo of East Moline, Illinois and Kenneth (and Rhonda) McCracken of Rio. Bud preceded her in death on June 19, 1963. She later married Walter Melton in 1970. Walter preceded her in death in 1992.

Along with her children, Doris is survived by her grandchildren, Tom (and Brenda) Neer, Teri (and Brad) Barton, Tim Neer, and Brian (and Michelle) McCracken and step grandchildren, Brian (and Deena) Fritz, Marcy (and Cotton) Myers, Steven Massarolo, Tony Massarolo, and Eric (and Angie) Massarolo. She has two surviving great grandchildren, Storme and Skya Barton and step great grandchildren, Dilan, Harley, Rachel, Bryson, Lincoln, Christian, and Emily. Doris also has numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren from her union with Walter Melton. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Blanche Ochs; and brother, Raymond Lucan.

She graduated from Galesburg High School with the class of 1935. Doris worked at the former O.T. Johnson, Fairyland Flowers, and Admiral Manufacturing.

Doris was a member of the Rio Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday School Director, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Ladies Service Guild. She also belonged to the Rio Women’s Club and TOPS. Doris was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting,and crafts.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Maura McGrath Nagle will officiate. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
