Day, Richard L.

Richard “Dick” L. Day, age 75 of Abingdon, died at 2:20 am Sunday, October 12, 2014 at his home.

He was born on November 27, 1938 on the family farm near Hermon, the son of Delwyn R. and Lucille Franklin Day. He married Janet Myers on May 10, 1957 at the Christian Church in Abingdon.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet; his twin sons, Tony (Rhonda) Day of Abingdon and Tim Day of London Mills; one daughter, Kelly (Steve) Judy of Abingdon; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Sheila) Day of Abingdon; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and stepfather, George Holeman.

He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1956. He worked as a carman for Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1999. He also took bartending classes in Peoria and later studied welding and auto body repair at Carl Sandburg Jr. College.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and he and Janet attended several Daytona 500 races. He was also a Green Bay Packer fan and was a gun collector. He enjoyed his family and supported them in all everything they did and participated in.

Graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. The celebration of Dick’s life will continue following the service at the home of Bill and Sheila Day in Abingdon. The family requests casual attire be worn by those attending the services.
