Joyner, James Thomas, Jr.

James Thomas Joyner, Jr. of Oquawka, died at 8:55 a.m. Monday, November 03, 2014 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

Jim was born January 26, 1931 in Chicago, the son of James Thomas, Sr. and Margaret Henrietta Schubert. He entered the US Marine Corp on December 10, 1951. He was discharged on December 2, 1953. He then married Marilyn J. Grange on December 29, 1954 in Chicago. Jim worked as an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 46 years, retiring in 1996. Jim was of the catholic faith. He enjoyed the outdoors, walking, riding his bike, and boating on the Mississippi River. He also enjoyed playing handball. Jim wintered in Arizona and loved to watch the Chicago Cubs at spring training.

He is survived by two sons, James Thomas Joyner, III and Nick Joyner of Mesa, AZ; two daughters, Debbie Rice and Brenda Vallero, both of Galesburg; one sister, Barbara Speziala of Sun City, AZ; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marilyn in 1977.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Costa Catholic Academy New Building Fund, 2726 Costa Dr., Galesburg, IL 61401. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.
