Rogers, Darla

Darla Rogers, age 49 of Galesburg, formerly of Abingdon, died at 8:10 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at home.

She was born on November 13, 1964 in Galesburg, the daughter of Lyle and Gara (McKinney) Nelson.

Darla is survived by two sons, Dustin (Kristen) Timmons of Knoxville and Tyson (Lindsey) Rogers of Galesburg; four grandchildren, whom she loved to spend time with, Lillian Rogers, Willow Rogers, Gentry Timmons and Isaiah Hollingsworth; her friend and caregiver, Frank Baker of Galesburg; her father, Lyle Nelson of Abingdon; her grandmother, Irene Nelson of Abingdon; two sisters, Joetta (Tony) Johnson of Abingdon and Colette (Loren) West of Abingdon; three brothers, Dace (Bobbie) Nelson of Abingdon, Brett (Kyla Goff) Nelson of Abingdon and Craig Nelson of Rochester Hills, Michigan.  She is also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gara Huber, her grandpa Don Nelson, and her stepmother Caroline Nelson.

She grew up in the Abingdon area and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1982.  She then attended the Carl Sandburg College Nurse Program and became a LPN.  She later fulfilled her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.  She worked at the Galesburg Clinic, Seminary Manor and she said “my best job was at Proctor Hospital in Peoria”.  She also worked for OSF Hospice.  She worked for Frank Baker and took care of his wife, Florence, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s.  Darla had the misfortune to choke on food and has since been disabled.  She loved being a nurse.  She was of the Catholic Faith.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery near her grandpa Don Nelson, whom she adored.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.  The celebration of Darla’s life will continue with food and fellowship at the Abingdon American Legion following the burial at the cemetery.
