Ray, Carolyn Marie

Carolyn Marie Ray, age 81 of Abingdon, died at 3:38 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2014 am at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

She was born on October 24, 1933 in Griggsville, the daughter of Emmett and Lena Dehart Dunham. She married Gordon L. Ray on July 22, 1956 in Plymouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Max Dunham and Robert Dunham, and one sister, Emma Jeanne Campbell.

Carolyn is survived by one daughter, Gwendolyn Lee (Roy) Rogers of Grapevine, Texas; three sons, Garold Lynn (Jean) Ray of Macomb, Geoffrey Otis (Karen) Ray of Champaign and Gregory Edward Ray of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Shawn (Erin) Rogers, Kyle (Virginia) Rogers, Jessica Ray, Henry Ray, Michelle Ray, Allyson Ray and Edward Ray; and four great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Roseville High School in 1951 and from the University of Illinois in 1956. She worked in the banking industry for 20 years, and was Vice President of the Abingdon Bank and Trust Company. She retired in 1998.

Besides living in Abingdon, she had also lived on the farm in the Berwick area and had lived in St. Mary in Hancock County.

She was a very active member of the Abingdon community. She was a member of the Christian Church, a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club and was the recipient of the George F. Hixson Fellow Award. She was a member and past president of the Chapter BB P.E.O., a member and past president of the Junior Women’s Club and the Women’s Club. She also was a member and past president of the OSF St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary in Galesburg. She established Baby Talk at the Galesburg Hospitals.

She was an avid Bridge player in the Abingdon, Lake Bracken, and Galesburg areas and even traveled to Bloomington and Champaign to play in Bridge Tournaments.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Christian Church, 409 S. Main St. in Abingdon. Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Christian Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
