Jones, Karl R.

Karl R. Jones, 72, of Galesburg died at 8:46 pm Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at his home.

He was born October 17, 1942in Galesburg the son of Claude and Irene M. Bloom Jones. He married Marsha K. Payton on August 28, 1965 in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving is his son, Christopher Karl (Tracy) Jones of Evergreen, Colorado; his two daughters, Laura K. (Paul) Rohling of Fox Point, Wisconsin and Sarah I. Jones of Galesburg; his brother, Owen C. (Linda) Jones of London Mills, Illinois; his sister, Elaine M. Jones of London Mills; five grandchildren, Ryan, Lucas, Kylie and Benjamin Jones and Adeline Rohling. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arlan C. Jones on December 3, 2009, and infant son Owen Dale Jones in 1978.

Karl started work as a dairy farmer. He then worked as a journeyman and master craftsman carpenter, working for Payton Construction and also Dale Sopher Construction. He was in business with his two brothers at Spoon River Millwork for historic preservation architecture. He later worked in the maintenance department at Maytag Corporation. He graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 1960 and attended Carl Sandburg College. Karl was a member of Architectural Woodworkers Institute. He was instrumental in the historic preservation of Knox College Old Main, Knox County Courthouse, Monmouth College President’s Home, National Register of Historic Places in Hannibal, Missouri and numerous historic buildings in Chicago and Galesburg. He enjoyed woodworking and glass etching and was an avid deer hunter.

Karl was a member of the Covenant Church. He served as Trustee and Deacon of the church. He was a youth counselor and a Children’s Church “Bouncer”. He participated in the Mens Week-end at Covenant Harbor. He was involved in many construction projects at Covenant Harbor and was in charge of reroofing the Covenant Church.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 am Monday, Decmeber 8, 2014 at Covenant Church. Visitation will be 2-4 pm Sunday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Cremation will follow services.
