Johnson, Clarence E.

Mr. Clarence E. Johnson, 93, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born February 28, 1921 in Galesburg to Emil and Ellen Lindgren Johnson. He married Lynette Carlson May 29, 1952 in Moline, Illinois. She preceded him in death October 25, 2014.

Clarence is survived by a sister-in-law, Rosemarie Johnson of Galesburg; three nieces, Judy Hoffman of Pekin, Illinois, Sylvia Webster of Galesburg, and Mary Jo Eklund of Gilson, Illinois; and great nephews and great nieces, Tyler Warren, Chad Warren, Kelly Schmidt, Aaron Hoffman, Rachel Karrow, Kristin Eklund, Kevin Eklund, and Kari Eklund. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Johnson and a sister, Rosa Pearson.

Clarence graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939 and Brown’s Business College in 1941. He then served in the U.S. Army, 28th Infantry Division, from1942 to 1945. He received five Battle Stars, including Battle of the Bulge. He was also awarded the Bronze Star. He was supervisor of accounting for the U.S. Postal Service for many years and retired in 1985. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg and volunteered for many years in the office. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and was past commander. He was also a member of the V.F.W. #2257 and Masonic Lodge.

Military rites will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel followed by graveside service at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Rev.
