John L. Hoyt, M.D. Age 90 of Wayzata, MN. Born March 16, 1924 in Raritan, Illinois. Died February 3, 2015 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Preceded in death by his wife, Marian Boggs Hoyt, parents Lee and Bessie Hoyt, brother Robert (Martha) Hoyt, Survived by children Ann (John) Kightlinger of Plymouth, MN, David (Kristin) Hoyt of Minnetonka, MN, and Robin Hoyt (Chuck Abplanalp) of Verona, WI. Great-grandchildren, Ella Glebe, Colette Glebe, Isabelle Kightlinger, John Cole Hoyt.

John was fiercly proud of his small town upbringing in Roseville, Illinois. Attending Roseville High School, he lettered for 4 years in football, basketball, and track (record-setting discus thrower), and was a member of chorus, choir, and a mid-west touring quartet.

In school he learned to be a stickler for correct use of the English language. Enrolling at Northwestern University in 1942, he was proud to have tackled Otto Graham on the opening kickoff of a frosh-varsity scrimmage. That same year he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and piloted B-24 and B-29 bombers until his discharge in 1946. He married his true love, Marian Boggs of Monmouth that same year. He graduated from Monmouth College and University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago in 1952.

John succeeded his father in his family medical practice in Roseville in 1952. He left that practice in 1966 for a University of Iowa Medical School anesthesia fellowship, serving as staff physician and eventually associate professor. He co-headed the surgical Intensive Care Unit at U of Iowa Hospitals. He moved to Minneapolis in 1977 and practiced with the Metropolitan Medical Center group heading that department until he retired from medicine in 1988. He was a caring and compassionate physician and an avid student of medicine beyond retirement.

As a youngster in the 1920’s, his family would vacation at Leech and Steamboat Lakes in Minnesota to catch walleye. That passion never left him. He fished in Minnesota on his honeymoon and every summer thereafter at Nelson’s Resort on Crane Lake, MN, likely his favorite spot on earth. For 50 years he led a fall fishing trip to northern Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. His angler skills were superb.

He loved organizing fishing, hunting, and skiing vacations for his treasured friends and family.

We wish to thank the nursing staff at Presbyterian Homes in Wayzata, MN for their excellent care over the past year.

We thank our mom and dad for all of the great times. You will be greatly missed by all of your family and friends.
