Gauthier, Joseph Harold

Joseph “Jay” Harold Gauthier, 68, died in peace January 21, 2015 in Las Vegas, NV due to complications following his bout with cancer.

Jay was born on October 2, 1946 in Chicago, IL the son of Clarence “C.J.” and Grayce Gauthier.

He graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a degree in Chemistry in 1968, then went back to Chicago to attend Northwestern Medical School. When his college girlfriend, Christine Zappala, graduated in 1969, they married. After graduation, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico for his internship and residency. Jay, Chris, and their two children, Brian and Lisa, moved to Reno in 1978 when Jay became a partner at Sierra Nevada Laboratories, specializing in forensic pathology. Jay and Chris divorced in 1987.

After leaving his practice, Jay married Laverne “Starr” Miller on March 2, 1990. Over the course of their 24 years, Jay and Starr lived in Hawaii, Reno, Virginia, and finally Las Vegas where Jay passed.

He is survived by his wife, Laverne “Starr” Gauthier, his step-son, Darryl Moore; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Rebecca Gauthier of Champaign, IL; his daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Michael Henderson of Reno, NV; his sister and brother-in-law, Nanci and Ron Van Blaricom of Palos Hills, IL; his niece and god daughter Laura Grayce, and 4 grandchildren Mark, Marshall, Anna, and Adam.

Jay was an intelligent, energetic, and passionate person who cared deeply for his family and friends, and was always willing to help others in need. A lifelong learner and avid sport fan (particularly the Duke Blue Devils), there was nothing he loved more than sitting in his chair while reading or watching a game. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife.

Memorial Services are scheduled for 10 am Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West in Galesburg, Illinois. Pastor Jennifer Miles will officiate. Cremation was accorded.
