Maguire, Joan W.

Joan W. Maguire, 79, of Monmouth, formerly of Geneseo, passed away at 12:35 a.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Legacy Estates, Monmouth.

Joan was born July 12, 1935 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of Donald Willis and Margaret (Staat) Watt. She was raised and educated in Monmouth graduating from Monmouth High School in 1953 and Monmouth College in 1969 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Education.

Joan married Ralph Earl Maguire in Monmouth on August 23, 1955 and he survives.

Joan was a homemaker. In addition to raising her family, over the years Joan worked in many different fields including teaching, working at WRAM radio station, IDS investments, Wyffle’s Hybrids, Nash Nash & Bean attorneys, and most recently turned her antiquing hobby into an antique dealership.

She loved music, playing the piano, tending her flowers, antiquing, and spending time with her family, especially her grand- and great-grandchildren. She made friends everywhere she went and was known for her witty sense of humor and welcoming smile. She enjoyed surprising her friends and family with birthday serenades, personal cards, and baked goods.

Joan was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Geneseo and most recently the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth. She was also a member of P.E.O., Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Colony Club in Geneseo.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Laurie (Mark) Todd of Monmouth; son, Michael (Mary) Maguire of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Amanda (J.R.) Todd-Andrews of Galesburg, Melinda Todd of Monmouth, Laura (Andy) Bogue, David Maguire, Rob Maguire and Maggie Maguire all of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Libby Andrews, Alexa Andrews, Landon Andrews all of Galesburg, Maximilian Bogue of Omaha; sister, Barbara Watt Johnson of Moline, IL; sister in law, Eleanor Maguire of Galesburg; nieces, Kathy Lara and Sara Gerlach and nephew, Matt Maguire.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark Maguire; brother in law, Richard Maguire and nephew, David Maguire.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at McGuire & Davies Funeral and Crematory, Monmouth. Cremation will take place following the services. Friends may call Saturday morning at the funeral home where her family will be present from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be given to Grace Methodist Church of Geneseo or the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth.
