One Dead, One Injured, Following Truck Hitting Train Near Williamsfield

Breaking NewsUPDATED 3:58pm  The Knox County Sheriffs Department confirms one person is dead and another is injured following an accident late Saturday night just west of Williamsfield.

Sheriffs Deputies today released details into the crash first reported around 11:15pm Saturday on Knox Road 2100 East just north of County Highway 18.  Deputies say that a truck driven by 20-year-old Cole Steele of rural Gilson was headed northbound on 2100 East, hit a train crossing arm, and then crashed into a train headed westbound.

11:13pm is when the accident was first reported, after deputies say an eastbound train spotted the damaged truck. It’s believed that the accident happened an hour earlier.

Steele was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knox County Coroner. A passenger in the truck — 22-year-old Andrew Stone of Knoxville — was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. His condition is not known.

Deputies say an investigation into the crash continues.

A candlelight vigil for Steele will be held Tuesday at 7pm at the Knoxville High School Football Field.
