Briggs, Inez L.

Inez L. Briggs, 99, of 1939 Jackson Rd. Ann Arbor, Mich., Formerly of Galesburg, Ill., moved on to eternal life at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Hillside Terrace Assisted Living.

Born January 28, 1916 on a farm near Altona, Ill. to Simeon and Mattie Abernethy McGaan. She married Cloyd Keith Briggs on Feb.21, 1947 in Galesburg. He died December 1, 1987.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Wayne, two brothers and two sisters. Surviving is a daughter, Sara Carriere (and John) of Ann Arbor; three grandchildren; Anthony Carriere (and Karen) of Huntsville AL; Rachel Carriere of Salem MA; and Adam Carriere of Ann Arbor, MI.

Inez graduated from Knox College in 1937 where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She worked at Gale Products during the war years and then taught in the Galesburg Public Schools until retirement in 1981. After retirement she worked at Cottage Hospital in the purchasing department for several years. In 1996 she moved to Ann Arbor.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid Bridge and Pinochle player. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Galesburg, participating in her church circle and always available to help with errands or driving people to appointments. (The American Red Cross was always calling her to give blood.)

Graveside service will be 11:15 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Rev. M.J. Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to The First Christian Church of Galesburg, Children Waiting Everywhere Inc. at 24 Frank Lloyd Wright Dr. Ann Arbor, MI 48105 and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
