Cuba, Velma Photo2Velma B. Cuba, 89, resident of Woodridge of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, died at 5:50 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Rosewood Health Care Center of Galesburg.

She was born January 16, 1926 in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of R. Otis and Helen Ingels Byers.  They preceded her in death.

She married Paul H. Cuba in the Presbyterian Church in Chatham, Illinois on August 14, 1949.  Paul preceded her in death on February 28, 2013.  Velma is survived by two daughters, Cynthia L. (Dan) Schenck of Poplar Grove and Paula S. (Mike) Brackett of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Jenny (Eric) Paulsen, Jeff Schenck, Jay (Nicole) Schenck, Sarah (Adam) Kettler and Steven (Amy) Schenck; two step-grandchildren, Libby

Brackett and Andy Brackett; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty B. Viar of Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Abingdon and Macomb; and several nephews and nieces.

Also preceding her in death was a son-in-law, Rudie Schenck and a brother-in-law, Don Viar.

Velma graduated from Chatham High School in Chatham in 1943 and from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1949, where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.  She did graduate studies at Western Illinois University and the University of Missouri.  She was a substitute teacher for a number of years and then taught second grade at the Abingdon Grade School for 20 years, retiring in 1984.  She had resided in Chatham growing up, Camp Point for four years, and moved to Abingdon in 1953, and later moved to Galesburg.  She was an active member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and she was a member of the United Methodist Women Unit, where she held many offices including president.  She was a member and past officer of the Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club and Delphian Literary Club, a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers and the Knox County Retired Teachers.  She volunteered at the Abingdon Grade School, Heartland Literacy and at various local activities

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church.  Rev. Jeff Robbins and Rev. Dan Schenck will officiate.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.  Cremation will be accorded following the services.  Private burial of her ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery at a later date.
