Walgreens Helping Shedd Aquarium Cut Pharmaceutical Waste

CHICAGO (AP) — A partnership with Walgreens is reducing pharmaceutical waste at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. At the same time, it’s ensuring veterinarians can quickly get everything from drops to settle a baby sea otter’s gassy stomach to probiotics for an aging iguana.

The Shedd announced Tuesday that Walgreens Pharmacy is providing on-demand access to medicines and supplements for its 32,000 creatures and hand-delivering them as needed. That’s allowed the aquarium to ditch much of its in-house stock of preventive care medicines, which often went unused and expired.

The Shedd’s animal hospital is one of the largest in the country, caring for more than 1,500 species.

The Shedd is keeping some on-the-shelf medicines at the aquarium to ensure it can respond immediately if needed.
