Developer Intends To Save Giant Oak Tree in Waukegan

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A planning official in the northern Illinois city of Waukegan says developers intend to save a giant Bur oak tree estimated to be more than 200 years old.

The tree is growing at a busy intersection outside a bank that’s slated for demolition and redevelopment. Neighbors have been trying to make sure the tree survives the planned construction.

City Planner Russ Tomlin tells the Lake County News-Sun he’s now heard from the developer, who wants to preserve the tree.

A tree specialist’s formula says the oak is about 226 years old. That means it would have sprouted when Waukegan was still a trading post known as Little Fort. Bur oaks can live up to 450 years.
