March Proves Colder and Snowier Than Usual in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois’ state climatologist says March was both colder than normal and unusually snowy.

Climatologist Jim Angel said Thursday the statewide average temperature for the month was 38.2 degrees. That’s 3.1 degrees colder than average and followed colder-than-usual weather in January and February.

Angel said March snowfall was widespread with some of the heaviest monthly totals surprisingly in southern Illinois.
The second-heaviest monthly total was 10 inches at Grand Chain Dam in far southern Illinois. The highest total was 12.3 inches in Danville in eastern Illinois.

Some northwestern Illinois locations had little snow, though.

Angel said the first couple of weeks of April are expected to be warmer than average.
