Short-Term Fix Allows Court Reporters to Avoid Furloughs

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Court reporters faced with spending several days at home each week as part of a cost-cutting response to an Illinois budget crisis are back at work thanks to a short-term fix by state lawmakers.

The Edwardsville Intelligencer  reports that state money from existing funds will be transferred to cover the gap pending more long-term measures by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the majority Democratic state Legislature, who are grappling with a $1.6 billion deficit.

The chief judge in southwestern Illinois’ Madison County had ordered court reporters to remain home for three days each week for the next several weeks. Other judges in the state had suggested that layoffs were likely for the clerical workers who record court proceedings
