CHICAGO (AP) — The owner of a Chicago prepaid cellphone business has pleaded guilty to tax underpaying federal income tax by $174,000 over four years.
Ken Leon of Westmont pleaded guilty to a single count of filing a false 2012 individual tax return in U.S. District Court on Thursday.
Judge Sara Ellis set sentencing for June 25. He faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Leon was owner of Ezbuypones. Its three Chicago stores sold cellphones, accessories, prepaid cellphone minutes and electronic bill-paying services.
The U.S. attorney’s office for the northern district of Illinois says that from 2009 through 2012, the 47-year-old Leon significantly underreported his income.
In 2012 he told an accountant preparing his taxes that he made $110,000 when he actually earned nearly $350,000.
