City Council to Discuss Funding Community Center

1-20-15 Galesburg City CouncilThe City of Galesburg could get a lot closer tonight to having an official community center for the first time since 2013.

City Council members will decide on whether or not the city will finance a contract with the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County.

If approved, the city would take the $115,000 from the sale of the cities previous community center..which was sold off two-years ago.

Contract approval could be met with opposition. In previous meetings, several alderman have expressed concern as to whether or not the Boys & Girls Club is the best location for the community center.

5th Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman recommended utilizing multiple locations such as the Knox County YMCA as “places to meet.”

3rd Ward Alderman Wayne Dennis has said he would be in favor of using the Broad Street Armory as the center.

The five year contract will be voted upon tonight.

If approved, the biggest expense of $88,500 would be used to fund various improvements to the facility. $49,000 would replace the furnace and boiler, while $14,000 would be used to upgrade air conditioning.

The city would also be required to pay a portion of employee salaries starting at $24,000 in the first year.
